Unit: How We Express Ourselves

Theme: The type of communication we use varies depending on the circumstances, purpose, audience and genre

Artistic and Creative Skills Required:

Visual Art: Students focus on their artistic skills to design and create the boxes exterior and any art that will be part of its content

Colour Theory: Students review their knowledge of colour theory and how colours work together to create a visual impact, a key aspect of pop art

Mixed Media: Familiarity with using a variety of art materials, from paint and markers to collage and found objects

Creativity: Generating unique and imaginative ideas for the boxes design and content.

What Did We Learn:

We looked at varying types of media and advertising. We began to critically think about what message adverts were trying to say (was it a true, false or partially true image/statement). We explored the work of Pop Artist Andy Warhol and his interest in popular culture. We discussed what was popular in todays culture and created our own Andy Warhol inspired ‘Time Capsule’ boxes. The boxes reflect our self expression and personality. We filled the boxes with personal items of our everyday life.

Materials: Paint, glue, tracing paper, popular imagery, pencils, cardboard boxes, paint brushes
